Essay 03

Twenty-one words on paper.

The recovery phrase is the spare copy of the key. It exists so a lost rail can be replaced. It is not a message for the company.

During setup the line shows 21 words, once. You write them by hand, in order, on paper that will not live next to the computer. When that screen is dismissed, the rail does not offer the phrase again. There is no setting that emails it, and there is no field on this website that wants it.

Goingclear, Inc. cannot rebuild a phrase it never received. A question about the device, a place on the bench list, or a privacy request can all be answered without those words. If a message arrives with the phrase in it, the useful part of the message is already compromised, because the phrase has left the paper.

Keep the paper where a camera, a cloud drive, and a chat window cannot see it. If the rail is lost or damaged, the paper is what lets a new rail restore the same keys. Until that day, the paper is the thing you protect, and the rail is the thing you read.
